God has implanted in our hearts a compelling desire to reach the
Italian people with the gospel. Our call is to see a living, breathing,
evangelical church planted in Trieste, Italy that would be capable of
reproducing itself. "Why plant a church in Italy?" you might ask. To
start with, the statistical evidence is startling. (Check out the 'Why
Italy?' section on our main site (triesteforchrist.com) to see what I
mean.) Yet the bottom line is that the gospel is not preached in
Italy.
To further understand the need you must understand that, just as in
many other countries around the world, Catholicism in Italy is not
the same as it is in the United States. Italians are taught from
childhood that there is no salvation apart from the Church and that
they can only obtain salvation based upon the works that they do
for it. To be Italian is to be Catholic, and with that they are given a
false hope that their performance will gain them salvation.
Despite the strong Catholic upbringing, many of the young people
are leaving the Catholic Church and the traditions of their parents
and grandparents to find answers elsewhere. Unfortunately, with
such a small evangelical witness, they turn to the occult to find their
answers. Italy has an estimated 100,000 full time, practicing
witches and warlocks.
Romans 10:14-15 says "How then shall they call on him in whom
they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom
they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things!"
